"The Arms of Nildo and Rony:" a NeuroMat story

A professional motorcyclist and a surgeon meet up at the waiting room of a physiotherapy clinic. They share a common story: rehabilitation after a traumatic brachial plexus injury. Their fate is somehow similar to the one of a famous soccer player who, after a serious lesion, must attend therapy sections to learn again how to play, after a period of recovery. These stories are the guiding narratives of a newly released educational material for patients, caregivers and health professionals, the illustrated magazine "The Arms of Nildo and Rony."

Could physical therapy be the future of specialised Parkinson’s care in Brazil?

Parkinson’s Life is an online ‘lifestyle’ magazine for people affected by Parkinson’s disease. Last month NeuroMat's AMPARO initiative was recognized as an outstanding initiative inside Brazil to promote collaboration between people with Parkinson’s and health professionals, in order to face clinical challenges via online lectures to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s. As an excerpt, we can read:

"Although there is a clear deficit regarding specialised Parkinson’s care in our country, I would like to highlight the good research centres in Brazil, such as the AMPARO network, developed in 2016 by the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centre for Neuromathematics. On the estimation of the mean of a random vector

We study the problem of estimating the mean of a multivariate distribution based on independent samples. The main result is the proof of existence of an estimator with a non-asymptotic sub-Gaussian performance for all distributions satisfying some mild moment assumptions.

Densities in large permutations and parameter testing

A classical theorem of Erdős, Lovász and Spencer asserts that the densities of connected subgraphs in large graphs are independent. We prove an analogue of this theorem for permutations and we then apply the methods used in the proof to give an example of a finitely approximable permutation parameter that is not finitely forcible. The latter answers a question posed by two of the authors and Moreira and Sampaio.

Nesting a culture for computational neuroscience

The Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics (RIDC NeuroMat) held in January and early February the seventh edition of the Latin American School on Computational Neuroscience. LASCON is a biennial school aiming at introducing advanced undergraduate, graduate students and young researchers, mostly from Latin America, to the use of mathematical and computational methods for modeling neurons and neural networks of the brain. Antonio Carlos Roque da Silva Filho, a NeuroMat co-principal investigator, is at the head of LASCON.
