In partial overlap with its roster of external members, the NeuroMat Center will establish close institutional ties with 3 laboratories in Brazil and abroad:
The Brain Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) will participate in the NeuroMat Center through researchers with a productive track record in electrophysiology, optical imaging and other methods for monitoring the brain. This group gathers a special ensemble of scientists that is unique in Latin America for its very widespread range of interests including learning & memory, synaptic plasticity, sleep, brain oscillations and neurochemistry, as well as disorders such as epilepsy, cerebro-vascular trauma and learning disabilities. At present, the following neuroscientists from the Brain Institute take part in the project: Sidarta Ribeiro (Director), Sérgio Neuenschwander (Vice Director), Antonio Pereira, Claudio Queiroz and Rodrigo Neves (faculty). These researchers already interact by way of project MacLinC with the group of Antonio Galves at IME/USP. The increased interaction between these groups through the NeuroMat Center will promote high-level scientific integration.
The Motor Control Group, from the Laboratory of Neurobiology II of the Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho (IBCCF) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) will participate by endowing the Neuromat Center with data and expertise in the domain of neurophysiology of action. Leaded by Claudia D. Vargas, who is a principal investigator of the NeuroMat proposal, the group is composed by a team of young motivated neuroscientists who employ EEG, TMS, stabilometric and behavioral techniques we investigate motor prediction, interactions between emotion and action and plastic changes in the human motor cortex occurring after lesions in the central and peripheral central nervous system.
The Center of Cognitive Neuroscience is a research center planned and built by CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). Its main objective is to develop interdisciplinary research on the mechanisms of cognition. This choice is justified by the potential impact of research in cognitive science on such problems as access to knowledge, cognitive development and cognitive dysfunctioning. A collaborative interface with Neuromat has been established with the Research Directors Angela Sirigu, an Associate Investigator of NeuroMat, and Jean Rene Duhamel, worldwide specialists in motor cognition, multimodal sensory integration and decision making.
